Ruth Patrick Postdoctoral Scholar

The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia seeks a Ruth Patrick Postdoctoral Scholar in Environmental Organic Biogeochemistry. We seek a broadly-trained, applied environmental organic chemist who would develop a laboratory- and/or field-based research program focused on abiotic or biotic aspects of organic contaminant fate and behavior. In addition, the candidate will assist in current projects and programs within the Patrick Center, which emphasize food-web bioaccumulation of PCBs and PBDEs, transport of contaminants in tidal rivers, and the spatial and temporal distribution of organic contaminants. We offer a two-year appointment with a possible third year. The Biogeochemistry Laboratory is fully equipped for a wide variety of projects and research.

Position Requirements:
A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline related to organic chemistry/ contaminant biogeochemistry; proven research publication record; grant writing ability and fund raising potential; excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively across disciplines. The successful candidate will collaborate in developing interdisciplinary research initiatives seeking external funding for new programs.

Watershed Scientist

The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at The Academy of Natural Sciences invites applications for a career-track, research position available immediately:

Experience:
Watershed scientist, with a background in hydrology, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, landscape ecology or related field. Applicants should have research experience in one or more of the following areas:

Interest in restoration ecology is desirable.

Requirements:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. (postdoctoral experience is desirable). Applicants are expected to build an externally-funded research program and to participate in multidisciplinary studies with other Patrick Center scientists, who investigate linkages between watershed processes and aquatic systems. Applications from established researchers are also encouraged.

About 6 Ph.D. scientists work together in the Patrick Center conducting studies on freshwater systems and estuaries, with emphases on (1) biogeochemistry; (2) physiological, population, community, and ecosystem ecology; (3) ecological assessment; (4) watershed science and management; and (5) ecological restoration. These studies examine how complex ecosystems work and develop solutions to real-world environmental problems, especially in urban/urbanizing watersheds.
