REU: Research Experiences for Undergraduates Fellowships
No Fellowships for 2009
Dear prospective REU students,
The Academy of Natural Sciences will not be offering Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) internships for the Summer of 2009. We are taking a year to evaluate the progress we have made as an REU site over the course of the past eleven years and to decide how we wish to take the program in the future.
As an institution that houses a museum, curated collections (containing over 17 million biological specimens), and research centers, The Academy of Natural Sciences provides a truly unique REU opportunity. Located in downtown Philadelphia, students get the full city-living experience while they pursue a rich research endeavor. Internships have been awarded to students in all of the following subjects: paleontology, natural history and museum studies, botany, science library research, biogeochemistry, evolutionary systematics (molecular studies), fisheries, programming, phycology (the study of algae), entomology, ichthyology, malacology (the study of mollusks), and stream ecology.
In the future, we will continue to grant internships in these fields and potentially others, depending on how our staff grows and changes during 2009. We thank you for your interest in our program, and encourage you, if eligible, to apply for the summer of 2010. We also suggest that you look at other internships and positions offered by the Academy of Natural Sciences (www.ansp.org/research/opportunities/internship.php).
Additionally, please visit the National Science Foundation's website (www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm) to locate other REU programs that may interest you. You may also find REU opportunities listed through the Institute for Broadening Participation's website (www.ibparticipation.org/IBPSummerresearch.asp).
Sincerely,
Ted Daeschler, Jon Gelhaus (Program Directors)
Rosemary Malfi (REU Coordinator)
