Why give to the 2008 Annual Fund?

aquatic science workshop

The next discovery is never far away at The Academy of Natural Sciences: it could be a wide-eyed six-year-old’s first encounter with T.rex in our lobby, or a scientist’s identification of a new species in the Amazon River basin.

The sense of delight and discovery offered by The Academy of Natural Sciences is one of the most important reasons why donors to the Academy’s Annual Fund believe their investment is worthwhile. As an unrestricted fund, the Annual Fund strengthens the core operations and financial well-being of the Academy, so that our visitors and scientists can continue to make exciting new discoveries that inform the basis of a healthy planet. Giving to the Annual Fund enables the Academy as an organization, to move forward with an inspiring vision.

Great plans are underway for the 200th anniversary of the Academy in 2012. Many exciting changes are planned for the museum, including immersive exhibitions of its historic collections. Some treasures will go on display for the first time.

We invite you to be part of the past, present and future of the Academy, the oldest natural science institution and museum in the Americas. Help us share and preserve our heritage in the natural sciences.

Please consider making an Annual Fund gift to The Academy. Our ability to serve nature and people depends on the commitment of friends like you.

2008 Special Appeal

Why give to the Patrick Center for Environmental Research?

The Academy of Natural Sciences’ Patrick Center for Environmental Research has focused on studying freshwater ecosystems since 1947 when the post-WWII industrial boom prompted the modern clean water movement.  The little-studied water pollution crisis drew the attention of an Academy biologist named Ruth Patrick.

Today, the Patrick Center is a national leader in watershed research and monitoring.  Its interdisciplinary staff includes specialists in fisheries, invertebrates and algae, as well as chemistry, bioassays and ecological modeling.

The Patrick Center’s broad research has a strong influence on the environmental science and policy issues that influence each of our lives.  Your personal investment in the Patrick Center, one of the first centers of its kind in the country, will continue the innovative science inspired by the legacy of Dr. Ruth Patrick.
