NEW! Academy Expedition Program

 

Summer is the time to dream big, live large, and discover the world around you! Take a field trip with the Academy every day. Whether you’re hiking through the wilderness to test your survival skills, unearthing cretaceous fossils, rowing through waterways to collect macroinvertebrates, or using your muscles to scale a rock wall, Academy Expedition Program is your passport for a week of exploration, discovery, and unbelievable fun for ages 12–16! Each particpant receives an Academy backpack and water bottle with registration.

Animal Training and Husbandry: Beginner

Get a hands-on animal care experience during this one-of-a-kind program. Learn about the basic care of the Academy’s live animal collection, and assist keepers and educators in the general husbandry, feeding, and training of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates. Find out about positive reinforcement and clicker training methods.

Program Activities

We have a week of great activities planned!

Participants will:

  • meet live animals and learn about basic handling and care
  • get an up-close and personal look at the live animals from our Live Animal Center
  • attend an wildlife rehabilitation inspired field trip
  • work with Academy staff to help prepare a naturalist presentation for Academy guests
  • and have fun!

Animal Training and Husbandry: Advanced

Use the skills introduced in the beginner program to set a specific animal behavior training plan for one of the Academy’s live animals. Identify a desired behavior; work closely with Academy staff to set a plan, personally build those behaviors with your assigned animal, and design a presentation highlighting the animal’s progress. (Prerequisite: Animal Training and Husbandry: Beginner)

Invertebrate Husbandry

Tap into your inner entomologist during this invertebrate intensive. Assist keepers and educators in the general husbandry, feeding, and handling of the live invertebrate collection at the Academy. Prepare displays for various live invertebrates, including insects and arachnids, learn about responsible collection, and collect invertebrates at various sites in the Philadelphia region to add to the Academy’s live collection. Then try your hand at scientific and personal specimen preservation.
*Teens who attended last season will work with higher level invertebrates for 2018.

  • meet live insects and learn about basic handling and care
  • get an up-close look at the animals from our invertebrate collection
  • venture into invertebrate-rich local parks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to learn how to identify insects
  • attend an insect collection field trip
  • work with Academy staff to help prepare live invertebrate displays
  • and have fun!
